Itinerary

Board your early morning flight into Bagdogra. Upon arrival, meet your road captain and support team, then drive 160 km through the lush foothills of West Bengal into Phuntsholing, Bhutan’s bustling border town. After completing Indian and Bhutan immigration formalities, settle into your hotel. In the evening, take a gentle ride around town to familiarize yourself with Bhutanese road etiquette and admire the traditional timber-and-stone architecture lining the streets.

Depart Phuntsholing after breakfast and climb steadily into the foothills before descending through verdant valleys to Gedu University. Continue past rural settlements to reach Paro valley. After checking in, explore Kyichu Lhakhang—one of Bhutan’s oldest temples—then visit Ta Dzong, now a national museum showcasing Bhutanese art and history. Conclude with a stroll through Paro’s main street and an evening visit to Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century fortress overlooking the valley.

Rise early for the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery hike. Follow the well-maintained uphill trail through blue pine forests, reaching the cliff-side monastery in 2–3 hours for panoramic views of the Paro valley. After descending, remount your Royal Enfield and ride over the winding road to Thimphu. En route, visit the colossal Great Buddha Dordenma statue perched above the valley. Arrive in Thimphu by late afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening exploring the capital’s lively market and traditional handicraft shops.

Depart Thimphu before dawn to conquer Dochu La Pass at 3,140 m, where 108 painted stupas create a serene mountain panorama. Descend into the fertile Punakha valley for lunch and a guided tour of Punakha Dzong, nestled between two rivers. In the afternoon, continue your ride through oak and rhododendron forests to reach Gangtey (Phobjikha) valley. Arrive at your guesthouse overlooking the U-shaped glacial valley, home to endangered black-necked cranes in winter.

After breakfast in the high valley, embark on the descent toward Trongsa. Stop at the historic Trongsa Dzong, perched dramatically above the Mangde River, and admire its intricate wood carvings and classical Bhutanese architecture. Continue through winding mountain roads that transition from alpine meadows to subtropical forest, crossing Pele La Pass and passing Chendebji Stupa. After lunch in Trongsa town, ride south through lush green hills to the remote riverside settlement of Tingtibi. Evening at leisure in this off-the-beaten-path village.

Set out for your most remote day, riding along the pristine Mangdechhu and Drangmechhu rivers through dense subtropical forests. Experience virtually traffic-free roads dotted with small rural communities. Stop in Panbang for refreshments and interact with villagers who maintain traditional farming and crafts. Continue eastward on smooth, undulating roads to Nganglam in Pemagatshel District. As you descend, lush greenery surrounds you, revealing the stark contrast between Bhutan’s highlands and deep south.

Depart Nganglam after breakfast and climb gradually through terraced farms and riverside hamlets of Pemagatshel. Enjoy smooth roads and scenic overlooks before descending into the subtropical plains toward Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan’s southeastern gateway. Stop en route at local markets to sample fresh seasonal fruits and snacks. Arrive in Samdrup Jongkhar by late afternoon for your final Bhutanese dinner and overnight stay in this vibrant border town.

After breakfast and Bhutan exit formalities at the Guwahati–Samdrup Jongkhar border, complete Indian immigration procedures at Guwahati. Then, enjoy a final countryside ride through Assam’s tea-growing region to Guwahati Airport. Aim for an afternoon flight to allow a relaxed departure. As you fly home, reflect on eight days of technical mountain passes, cultural landmarks, and pristine backroads that define the ultimate Bhutan motorcycle tour.
